New houses bring overcrowdi­ng fears

Hundreds of new social houses planned for west Auckland has sparked overcrowdi­ng concerns in New Lynn and Avondale.

In May the Government announced the two suburbs will get 368 and 342 new houses respective­ly in the next three years.

There were 15 new houses planned for Rata St in New Lynn. But resident Jareem Khan said the infrastruc­ture would struggle with more traffic, which was ‘‘bumper-tobumper’’ as early as 6.30am on most weekdays. He said it took up to one hour to get to Rata St from Avondale during rush hour.

On the corner of Bollard Ave and New North Rd in Avondale, 32 onebedroom apartments were planned. Resident Leigh Winfield said the

new homes meant community spaces would become congested.

In New Lynn, Hill Cres resident Laurie Roberts said he needed to know more about the design of the 14 homes being built on his street.

Pili Apulu said he was worried increased traffic would comprise children’s safety.

He was concerned the street would be overcrowde­d with multistore­y units.

On Racecourse Pde in Avondale,70 new houses will be built. Marina Graham said the street was busy, especially on Sundays, but she understood the need for new houses.
