New culvert for New Lynn

- MAHVASH ALI

An extra culvert is the best option to increase New Lynn’s stormwater capacity, Auckland Council has decided.

The new structure will be added above the existing culvert underneath Great North Rd and the original culvert will also be strengthened.

Auckland Council’s principal of operational management Craig Mountjoy said preliminary work had begun on the existing 1200mm channel, he said.

He said both culverts were expected to be completed within the first quarter of 2018. Mountjoy estimated the project may cost about $3.7 million. Throughout the project traffic would continue to operate on a three-lane basis.

Strengthening work on the old culvert would be completed within a week in July this year, he said. The next stage would be to install a new rectangular shaped culvert above. Work on establishing the new 4-metre wide and 3m high structure would begin around August and was expected to take about six months, he said. This was the most costeffective, and least time consuming, option. Building a bridge or replacing the current culvert were the other options considered. Mountjoy said with an estimated price tag of about $6m a bridge was the most expensive option, and would take the longest time to build.

‘‘We wanted to select something with the least amount of disruption for the community.‘‘
