Art of the future out west

-

An exhibition at New Lynn train station has free postcards.

Why go to a gallery when you can see art at the train station?

A pop-up exhibition featuring six artists will be displayed at the New Lynn train station until the end of June. The exhibition, Revolver: Te Ao Turoa, featured new works from artists Ant Sang, Vasanti Unka, T.Wei, Nathan Foon, Jem Yoshioka and Jane Park, a press release said.

The works were revolved over six weeks, and free postcards of the art would be at the station to take home. ‘‘Change can be as rapid as it can be unpredictable, but one thing is certain – change is inevitable. For this exhibition, we gave six of New Zealand’s best illustrators free licence to imagine a future Aotearoa,’’ exhibition producer Hayden Eastmond-Mein said.

Graphic novelist Ant Sang, who was head designer for TV series Bro’Town, saidthe idea behind his artwork was an ‘‘unstable future’’.

He thought about how his daughters would cope in the world in the future, he said.

It was about projecting his fears on the paper. The artist said he used pencil and ink, then scanned the drawing and used photoshop to colour it. He said it was cool to have the work displayed in a public space because many people don’t go into galleries.

It was a good idea to ‘‘bring the art to the people’’.

Revolver was part of Satellites series, which hosted a series of exhibitions, performances and ‘‘unexpected encounters’’ across Auckland that showcased contemporary Asian artists.

The exhibition runs until June 30. Vasanti Unka and Nathan Foon are on display from June 2 to June 15. From June 16 to June 30 Jane Park and Jem Yoshioka will show their art in New Lynn. Go to satellites.co.nz for more.
