MOTORWAY SPEED

-

Reducing or increasing the road speed is not the solution to bad driving.

Teaching sharing behaviour to many immature Kiwi motorists will cure the disasters occurring on our highways.

Stop acting as though your rights have been ripped away when restrictions are applied in wrong attempts to fix the problem.

As an ex-driver, I have been on the receiving end of this irresponsible driving and still am as a pedestrian as I wait to cross busy roads. Even crossings are not safe today.

I have read with interest the article in the Western Leader on September 5 about the 80kmh limit applying to the motorway from around Rosebank Rd.

I did a trial on this stretch of motorway and found that when travelling into the city the distance from the first illuminated 80kmh sign to the end of the off-ramp at Hobson St is seven kilometres.

If you travel at 100kmh for that distance it will take you 4.2 minutes. At 80kmh the time is 5.2 minutes.

It would be interesting to know what Saten Sharma is going to do with the whole minute gained at the higher speed. Factor into this the fact that there will be a speed limit in place of 80kmh, I would suggest for about half the distance, then there is only a saving in travel time of around 30 seconds.

While I like to travel at 100kmh, I can see why a slower speed limit is desirable on this stretch of road. There are four offramps and two on-ramps and the connection to the Southern Motorway and the Port off-ramp.

Because of the different lane you have to be in for each of these departure points and the joining traffic from the connections there is a lot of lane shuffling going on in that stretch of motorway.

It seems that those not travelling frequently do not read the direction signs and arrows and have to make sharp last second lane changes to get where they want to go. The lower speed limit is desirable. ALLAN AITKEN Te Atatu Peninsula

A comment was made in the Western Leader on September 13 by the Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett which does not resonate well with me.
