Residents win review of Piha’s ‘ludicrous’ road

Western Leader - - YOUR LOCAL NEWS - DEBRIN FOXCROFT

In a win for local residents, Auckland Transport will investigate options for changes to the Piha Rd, Quinns Rd and Scenic Drive intersection.

The section of road has been a focus of community efforts for redevelopment, with locals describing regular accidents and confrontations between drivers.

Residents said they hoped a roundabout would be installed to reduce speed and increase safety at the intersection.

However, details of road improvements have yet to be confirmed.

AT media relations manager Mark Hannan said the organisation was looking at options for the road.

‘‘We’re undertaking a proactive study of our network currently, including this intersection,’’ he said.

‘‘This involves reviewing the crash data to see whether there are any new patterns that warrant any intersection improvements.’’

AT would also review whether any low-cost changes could be made to the intersection, he said.

Resident Wayne Edwards who has spent three years calling on AT to make changes to the intersection - said he hoped AT would follow through with improvements.

The current design of the intersection was fundamentally flawed, he said.

Issues included the confusing layout, potential for speeding, lack of visibility and the refusal of many drivers to obey the compulsory stop sign out of Piha Rd.

He has taken photos of various incidents including a head-on crash involving a police vehicle, buses and caravans getting stuck, and larger vehicles using the car park as a turning bay.

Piha resident Mark Scott said the intersection was ludicrous, confusing and particularly problematic

‘‘As more and more overseas visitors come to Piha, the more dangerous it becomes.’’

for visiting drivers.

‘‘As more and more overseas visitors come to Piha, the more dangerous it becomes.’’

Police said they carried out unplanned traffic control at the intersection during the peak summer period.

‘‘This was not planned beforehand but police staff who happened to be in the area assisted with traffic at that intersection due to the heavy traffic congestion on that particular occasion.’’

A resident photographed a collision involving a police car at the Piha Rd, Quinns Rd and Swanson Rd intersection.
