Genista Yellow Imp an easy to grow shrub

-

This delightfully bright colourful plant is commonly known as ‘yellow broom’, although it is not actually a broom (‘cytisis’), it is closely related being a legume.

Genista Yellow Imp is a fast growing shrub that will fill a decent amount of space quickly. It produces a spectacular display of bright, bold golden yellow flowers from August to October each year. The plant has small oval pale green leaves and looks attractive all year round.

This popular plant is a gem for gardens in Whanganui, and does exceptionally well in areas of lighter soils. It is easy to grow and when in bloom will attract not only the attention of passersby but also bees, insects, butterflies and birds. The wood pigeon in particular like to feast on the new growth.

Yellow Imp forms a drought hardy shrub, growing up to 1.8m x 1.8m. It can be pruned after flowering each year to maintain a smaller size, being quite comfortably limited to 1m x 1m in size. Yellow Imp looks good on its own, or in a mixed garden planting. It withstands wind and can be used to offer protection and shelter to other plants. Yellow Imp can be planted in a pot and grown for a couple of years before it outgrows it, but then will need to be planted out into the garden.

It performs best in full sun, though will tolerate light shade.

Have you got a gap that needs to be filled? Consider Genista Yellow Imp for an easy to grow shrub with a spectacular flower display.
