NZ Burning Man secures 10-year resource consent

Kiwiburn sought consent that worked for both the community and the festival

-

Kiwiburn will return to Rangitikei in 2020 with the festival securing a 10-year resource consent at its current site near Hunterville. In August organisers were forced to cancel the 2019 festival after an agreement with Rangitikei District Council about noise levels could not be reached leaving not enough time to organise the multi-day event.

But Kiwiburn Incorporated announced yesterday it has now been granted a 10-year resource consent from 2020.

The organisers said their consent was still subject to conditions because of the surrounding community’s concerns around noise issues.

“To ensure there are no breaches of the resource consent, Kiwiburn will be putting new measures in place and sound camps will be expected to take more responsibility,” organisers said on their

Facebook page.

“Details of the requirements of our consent will be released soon, and the plans to meet the conditions will follow in due course.”

Kiwiburn is the New Zealand version of the famous Burning Man festival in Nevada, United States and has been held annually in late January for 15 years and on private property near Hunterville since 2014, after moving from the Waikato.

When Kiwiburn announced the cancellation of the 2019 festival it cited a need to get a consent that worked for both the community and the festival.

“It is very important for Kiwiburn to have a positive relationship with the local community, so we are actively seeking ways to assure them that the event will not have a negative impact,” a statement said.

At the time council chief executive Ross McNeil said: “We’re absolutely supportive of this and other events coming to our district but we are mindful there is a process we need to go through.”
