Sarjeant Gallery staff received a record number of submissions for the 2019 pattillo Whanganui Arts Review this year.

More than 188 works have been submitted and Sarjeant public programmes director Greg Donson said there is a huge array of media this year.

“Submission day is a great social day at the Sarjeant. It’s always great to see people from all over the region catching up with each other — we saw lots of new faces yesterday and had lots of newcomers become members.

“Also, of course, lots of our longstanding friends and artists dropped in with their pieces,” Donson said.

“There’s always a terrific sense of anticipation and excitement.”

Whanganui glass artist Kathryn Wightman who received the open award for her kiln-formed glass work,

last year surprised everyone with her 2019 submission.

Instead of glass, this year Wightman has used a 3D printer to produce Austin — a life-sized bust made from a scanned image of her 2-yearold son accompanied by a smaller gold-painted version.

The judge for 2019 will be Andrew Clifford, director of Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery in West Auckland.

Names of successful entrants will be announced on Monday, March 4, and will be listed on the Sarjeant website at 5pm. Judging will commence on March 6 and awards will be presented on March 8.

The 2019 pattillo Whanganui Arts Review exhibition opens to the public on Saturday, March 9, at Sarjeant on the Quay.
