Health awards to be community-wide event

- Staff Reporter news@whanganuichronicle.co.nz

The Whanganui District Health Quality Awards have been revived and revamped to now include the wider health sector.

This year’s awards are known as Te Tohu Rangatira 2019 and have been opened to embrace all those involved in the health arena.

Organised by the District Health Board, the awards were last held in 2017 and were restricted to DHB staff.

However, with so much good work going on in Whanganui’s busy health sector, the decision has been made to make the awards a communitywide event.

Organising committee chairwoman Louise Allsopp said a lot of that work flies under the radar.

“Te Tohu Rangatira 2019 aims to turn that around and shine a little light on all those making a difference to the health of our community,” she said. “It is important that we recognise, acknowledge and celebrate their efforts.”

All providers or individuals working to benefit the health and wellbeing of people within the DHB region can be nominated, including all non-clinical employees and volunteers.

DHB chief executive Russell

Simpson is keen to see as many people put their hands up as possible.

“Every day I see and hear stories from our community about successes within our health services,” he said.

“It is important to reflect on the great work happening across the Whanganui region and I invite you to enter or nominate an individual or team who deserves acknowledgement.

“Many workers in the health field are humble and perform their vital roles without expecting recognition.

“These awards provide an opportunity for us to collectively celebrate the success, excellence and innovation of work being done across our community in the health and disability sector.”

Te Tohu Rangatira 2019 culminates with the winners being unveiled on September 6 at a gala evening at Whanganui racecourse’s Eulogy Lounge.

There are 10 categories of awards and entries are now open.
