Council work includes spray alert for Lake Wiritoa

-

There is a range of maintenance and upgrade works being undertaken around Whanganui.

The Whanganui District Council says a section of the shared pathway in Whanganui East between the multisport club and Dublin St is being torn up so it can be replaced.

The work started last week and is scheduled to be completed by Thursday, December 22.

“The existing asphalt is being replaced with concrete as an upgrade to this part of the shared pathway,” the council said.

“Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to follow a detour around the construction area during the work,” it said.

Further along the river, a section of the shared pathway along Taupō Quay that connects with Cobham bridge was closed on Friday and will be getting resurfaced until Thursday, December 8.

The existing shellrock surface is being replaced with concrete as it is prone to washouts and scouring from heavy rain.

“Pedestrians and cyclists on this part of the shared pathway are advised to use the alternative rail crossing further along Taupō Quay approaching the Heads Rd intersection.”

From today council contractors will be spraying Reglone herbicide in swimming and water skiing areas at Lake Wiritoa in an attempt to manage invasive hornwort.

That means for people that live within 1km of the lake and use it for water should not bathe in it, consume it or use it for fish farming or livestock for 24 hours after application.

“Please also note that swimming in the lake is prohibited for 24 hours after the herbicide application, and water should not be used for overhead irrigation for 10 days after treatment,” council said.

Depending on the weather, the alternative date for spraying is Tuesday, council said.

“Signs will be displayed advising of the spray operation during the work period.”
