When is a wardrobe .... an extravagance?

- Writes Kem Ormond

Awardrobe should be more than a hanging rail. Over the years I have written many house reviews and I have always found an interest in space saving ideas, including the humble wardrobe!

Decluttering and organising the home can change the way we live, and in terms of the bedroom, the wardrobe is the best place to start. Whether it is a wardrobe renovation or a designer wardrobe as part of a new build , the options are vast and varied.

So,wha tm akes ag rea tw ardrobe?

Make sure you do plenty of homework first! Visit and chat to friends, suppliers, hardware stores and even your local builder. This is an ideal opportunity to get some understanding on how to best use the space you have available.

Walk-i n...orw alk-through?

Sometimes the type of wardrobe you end up having ,simply comes down to the space you have. A separate walk-in wardrobe can be carefully planned to include rails as well as drawers and a shoe rack, where as a walk-through wardrobe can be a little more limiting, especially if it leads into an ensuite. Another idea can be the use of a false wall built to be used as a head board for your bed, leaving an area behind for a walk-though wardrobe.

Wardrobe organisers and systems ,h ow do you choose?

Ventilated wire wardrobe shelving is a popular storage solution when you are looking for cost effective shelving for lightweight items, such as clothing and linen. Custom made shelving is another option and can be used for shoes, jerseys, or even suitcases.this type of shelving is robust and can be designed with removable and changeable shelves.

Check out what is available in modular made systems as sometimes these can fit directly into an existing wardrobe.

You may be lucky enough to have room for a full length mirror, even behind the door is a good option.

Wardro be d oors should not restrict ease of access

Sometimes it is worth considering adding extra storage above the wardrobe for items used only occasionally. This will enable you ease of access to the actual wardrobe, for everyday items. Sometimes a change of door style or not even having doors, can give you the added space that you require.

The final sort out

Don’t stock pile clothes that you no longer wear or fit. A new wardrobe is the ideal opportunity to have a good clean out of unwanted clothes. Share the surplus with friends and local charity shops and then divide your clothes into winter and summer. Out with unworn shoes and surplus handbags and come the new season, you will be sorted and ready to go!
