THE PERFECT SPOT

- By PAUL BROOKS

There’s a special feeling in the space where Carla Langmead conducts her holistic business, Carla’s Coaching.

Accessible by a set of stairs in Sarah Brierley’s Victoria Ave shop, Victoria’s Treasures, the space sits in a mezzanine floor high above the quality giftware and lavish displays.

Sarah saw what Carla wanted to do and offered her the room.

The space is tranquil, welcoming, a peaceful ambience with its subdued lighting and complementary colour scheme.

“It’s really nice for reiki and it’s good for conversation too. The whole shop has a beautiful vibe,” says Carla.

On her wall is a large, circular motif of white lettering on an orange background — One on One. That’s how it works.

“I love the powerful image and I love the orange,” she says. “It’s a strong, vibrant colour.”

It’s where Carla conducts life coaching and goal setting sessions, hypnotherapy, reiki, fitness consulting, therapeutic sessions and a programme called Hypnocise, a combination of hypnotherapy and personal training.

What sort of person would ask Carla for help?

“They are seeking self care, self management and support with that. They might be at a crossroads, looking for direction, but don’t know where to start.

“It doesn’t sit in the General Practitioner space and doesn’t sit in the counselling space either. There’s nothing wrong but you’re seeking something . . . you’re on some sort of cycle of change.

“I see it like a form of supervision,” she says.

Carla talks about facilitating a dialogue culminating in strategies to help you move through whatever it is that’s holding you back.

“I see this as supporting people through a process of change, when change has been recognised as something that needs to happen.

“I don’t know how many times I hear ‘I don’t know who I am anymore’. It could be anything that’s brought them to that point.”

Carla says it’s not for people with high complex needs: people coping with serious trauma.

“It’s not a trauma space. This is about self-management and self-care. Why sit at home and struggle when you can come and talk to an objective person?”

Carla finds the space above Sarah’s shop free from the stigma of a space so secret it implies secrecy, rather than discretion. Here, with the happy sounds from the store below, the space is welcoming but still private.

“The hypnotherapy, the exercise support, the life coaching and the reiki all inform part of that self-awareness . . . you can’t get better physical health without filters changing and some other aspect of your life changing as well.”

Carla promotes self-efficacy, enabling people to make better decisions for themselves.
