Bird photographer to speak
This month’s presentation in the Nature Talks series is by Paul Gibson, well-known and highly acclaimed photographer, writer and publisher of several books on New Zealand birds.
His first book, New Zealand Birds — a diverse selection,
published in 2007, was well received and encouraged him to write and illustrate another, Birds New Zealand — a beautiful
collection, published in 2010. Like the first book, this one soon flew off the shelves (pun intended).
Four years later, Paul published his third bird book: A completely redesigned, richly illustrated and highly informative book called Birds New Zealand — beauty like no
other. Like its predecessors, that book has all but disappeared from bookshop shelves, suggesting that people are drawn to Paul’s books, both by the superb photographs and by the engaging and personal nature of the text.
During this Nature Talks presentation, Paul will talk about his latest book, which has just been published. This is a revised and expanded second edition of his previous book, with more pages (320 versus 300) and covering 80 more species, many illustrated and discussed in detail. Paul will describe some of his trips, including to the subAntarctic islands, in search of new species and experiences, and better photographs. Signed copies of the book will be available after the talk for anyone who wishes to purchase one.
The talk will be at the Davis Lecture Theatre on Tuesday, August 21, starting at 7.30 pm. Nature Talks is a series of monthly talks on topics of environmental and conservation interest, jointly organised by the regional branch of Birds New Zealand, the Museum Botanical Group and the Whanganui branch of Forest and Bird, in conjunction with the Whanganui Regional Museum. Entrance is free, although a koha is always appreciated. For enquiries, contact Peter Frost (06 343 1648).
