Cellophonics to perform
Following their very popular and highly successful concert in Whanganui last year, Cellophonics are returning to play on Thursday, August 30 at 7.30pm in the Prince Edward Auditorium of Wanganui Collegiate School, as part of their North Island Tour 2018.
The cello is becoming an increasingly favourite instrument, made even more popular recently by Sheku Kanneh-Mason at the Royal Wedding. If you love the cello, then what can be better than eight cellos, a cello choir and orchestra all in one.
The University of Waikato cello octet, Cellophonics, was created as a performance outlet for the excellent cello students enrolled at the Conservatorium of Music, Waikato University, studying with James Tennant. For some years James has been the instigator for numerous cello groupings including the Auckland Cello Ensemble and the Belli Celli, featuring players from the Auckland Philharmonia. These ensembles have collaborated with many national and international artists including soprano Patricia Wright and cellist Julian Lloyd Webber.
Cellophonics has been in existence for the past nine years and is the only permanent ensemble of its kind in the country. This outstanding group have, over the years, performed in most of the musical centres of New Zealand. Among its illustrious alumni can be counted many students who have won national and international competitions, including Santiago Can˜ o´ n Valencia, Edward King and most recently Mattias Balzat who will be performing with the group again this year. Apart from their technical excellence, members of Cellophonics are best known for the vitality and “joie de vivre” they bring to their performance. In this concert, they will play music by Boccherini, Pachelbel, Bizet (the Carmen Fantasy), Villa Lobos alongside other works, including Romanian Folk Dances and the beautiful Popper Requiem.
