Publication’s next issue out soon
Issue 11 of The Great War Times will be published a week before Armistice Day, November 11, 2018.
Articles in this issue include the events leading to the signing of The Armistice and the celebrations that followed the end of the war plus the capture of Le Quesnoy on November 4, a notable victory for the New Zealand Division. Other articles feature conscientious objectors and the Spanish Flu pandemic.
The Great War Times is a free publication produced by the Whanganui Regional Heritage Trust and is funded by the Lotteries Board, as part of WWI commemorations.
It is modelled on the informal newspapers written to boost the morale of soldiers on the Western Front. Issues contain stories from the Whanganui region plus articles on the major battles and events in which New Zealand took part.
The first issue was published in 2014 and copies of most of the previous issues are still available from the Whanganui Regional Heritage Trust office (Pettigrew Room) in the Alexander Heritage Library.
Please contact the trust via email or post first, as the office is only open at specific times.
There are two more issues to complete which will cover the return of those who served and the memorials made to commemorate those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
The editorial team is made up of Ann McNamara (trust board), Tricia Duncan and Jenny Shaw (trust members) and Libby Sharpe (senior curator at the Whanganui Regional Museum).
They research, write and edit material for this publication. Information supplied by interested members of the public is much appreciated and they are acknowledged at the end of their articles in each publication.
