Whanganui Midweek

45 years in stitches

- By PAUL BROOKS

The Wanganui Embroiderer’s Guild celebrated Christmas and a history of 45 years at a function last Thursday evening at Citadel in Castlecliff.

Esther McIvor was there at the very first meeting and still does a lot of embroidery. Her daughter, Fiona, was president of the guild for the past four years, a role taken over last month by Judy Ahmadi. Judy’s also an oboe player so there is no end to the talent in the guild.

The guild still has 25 members, of which 15 attended the end-of-year function.

Active members are busy and next year they have two international tutors attending — from Canada and Australia — to give lessons to the guild.

Members are also taking part in an exhibition at the Community Arts Centre in May next year, introducing many Whanganui people to embroidery.

“It ranges from cross stitch to hardanger, canvas work, blackwork — different styles, different techniques,” says Judy.

Treasurer Jan Conley has been a member for more than 20 years and says while current members are all getting older, there is room for younger people to join and learn the art of embroidery.

Judy addressed the members at their Citadel table.

“Obviously this is our Christmas dinner, but it’s also the 45th anniversary of the guild. We’ve got one of the founding members here, so we have a small presentation.”

Esther was presented with a bouquet, as was Fiona as retiring president.

“Thank you for everything you’ve done for the guild,” said Judy.

Esther and Fiona cut the cake together.

The Wanganui Embroiderers’ Guild welcomes new members. Contact Judy Ahmadi on 345 9585 or judy_ ahmadi@hotmail.com.
