Community needs to work together
Whanganui residents with a Whanganui District Library card now have free access to thousands of independent and classic films and documentaries via the Kanopy on-demand streaming video service.
Each library card holder can view up to 10 films a month from the general section and unlimited access is available for titles in the Kanopy Kids section. Three days are allowed for viewing a film.
“Kanopy has tons of really good stuff across a range of interests. Everybody will find something on there to entertain them, inspire them and broaden their horizons,” says Whanganui District Library manager Pete Gray.
To create a Kanopy account, visit the Kanopy website (www.kanopy.com) or download the app and log in with a library card number and the password for that card. Forgotten passwords can be updated through the library website: www.whanganuilibrary.com/ ?s=forgot+password
Mr Gray says the new service complements the other digital media already provided by Whanganui District Library.
Library patrons are able to access thousands of free e-books and audiobooks through the Libby app (https:/ /meet.libbyapp.com/). Anyone can download the Libby app for free, enter ‘Wanganui District Library’ in the location information, then input a library card number and password. This information only needs to be entered when setting up for the first time.
Full-colour digital magazines are also available for library card holders on RB Digital, which is touted as ‘the world’s largest newsstand’: www.rbdigital.com/ whanganui/service/ magazines/landing?
Library membership is free. To become a member, visit your local branch or sign up online. Library locations are listed here: www.whanganuilibrary. com/index.php/where-we-are/.
The word “community” seems to be on a lot of lips this last week. Midweek certainly understands the concept of community at a fundamental level — good on you, Midweek!
I’ve also just had the privilege of sitting around the coffee table with a key stakeholder in health provision, and his korero was full of the community spirit and vision. He aligns to a collective shift and consciousness that unites rather than separates. This, to me, is at the heart of community, and it would be really nice if he gets to see the fruits of his labours.
Although it’s a big vision, I do think it’s possible if we focus on constructive interference rather than destructive interference, or in other words let’s aim for a complete shift in thinking towards working together collectively and cohesively.
The paradox here, though, is that this paradigm shift is only going to happen at the rate of each of us individually exploring where our own beliefs sit in order to recognise it in others. We only see from our own perspective, which means we have to broaden our own thinking before we can see it in
others. Bringing awareness to our own belief systems is behind the work that I do. I give people the opportunity to explore their thinking and to identify what it feels like when that belief system is giving them the life that they seek — or, in other words, constructive interference. Our community exists because of belief systems, that’s as simple as it gets. Modern science now has the capability to measure how we individually “measure up” and also how we affect each other and the planet. We are literally shifting the frequency and the health of this planet, so what we believe in deeply matters.
The work of Dr Bruce Lipton, cell biologist, has plenty of research around this. Recommendations from Dr Lipton for creating a healthier community:
Create the best, healthiest and happiest experience for yourself and share it with the community.
Find out who’s protesting with you. Gather them together and step out of the system. Use your energy for construction rather than destruction, and find other compatible communities. That’s constructive interference.
Put your energy into constructing a new system. If you build a better system, people in the old one will gravitate to the new one.
Focus on yourself and finding like-minded people to create a community in which all your energies are enhanced.
