Repurposed artwork wins prizes at exhibition

-

The winners of the Hakeke Street Library and Community Centre Repurposed Art Exhibition were announced at the opening on November 2.

Children’s first place with a car made out of recycled and repurposed materials was won by Thomas McMurray.

Second place went to Piper Reeds for her mask.

For the adults section there were two second equals — Morgana Topfer with an impressive hanging piece made out of fizzy drink bottle ends, all with different colours and textures, and Elmarie Vorster was the other second place winner with painted pieces of off-cuts of wood. It was a set of five pieces making a small village of houses.

First-place went to Lysha Brennan who used recycled wire to form a copy of a drawn picture.

There were also three children’s workshops and three adult classes which used art as a start of a conversation about waste, how all of us needed to not only recycle, repurpose and most importantly think about what we purchase and use in our lives. If we can reduce items going to landfill this will make a difference. These classes were run by Esther Topfer, along with speakers from Sustainable Whanganui and the Resource Centre.

The Hakeke Street Library and Community Centre thanked Councillors Helen Craig, for judging the event, and Josh Chandulal Mackay for presenting the prizes.

This event was possible from the support of the Whanganui Council Minimisation Fund and the Whanganui District library.
