Trend is not your friend

- Rachel and Rebecca

A few weeks ago, I caught up with a friend who asked me what the latest trends are in home interiors. I did have a chuckle to myself as I am not a fan of overusing trends in an interior. Some trends are classic such as the use of house plants and others are not and will disappear in the blink of an eye. As a designer I see trends come and trends go and as nice as it is for some homes to add some of the current trend to their interiors keep in mind that as soon as a trend changes your items can possibly look outdated. I am a fan of a home showcasing what is important to the homeowner. Cherished items that tell a story or new items that just make the homeowner smile. Artwork that has resonated with the homeowner or a gift from a good friend or a cherished gift from a child or grandchild are all what creates the essence of a home. This particular friend of mine M has a wonderful home that her and her husband have renovated, and it is filled with the most wonderful collections of interesting items. M is a creative herself and loves to have collections of items in her home which she has been adding to over many years. She has a small wall space that is covered in ceramic crosses, a couple of shelves on another wall that are covered in white ceramic jugs of varying shapes and sizes along with some very healthy house plants. On a sideboard she has a collection of single crystal candle holders. Again, all of various shapes, size and texture, some with candles in and some without. She has a magnificent display of indoor plants which are very much on trend, although I think they are a household staple. Her dining room table is an antique table with mis matched antique chairs. The table is covered in dings and bruises for many a family diner. The scares of her Grandsons teeth marks from when they were teething are evident on one end of the table and to me this home is full of love, creativity, and the most delightful treasures to gaze upon while enjoying a cup of tea. If you wish to fill your home with on trend item’s, make sure you do not loose the essence of your home in the process. Be creative and mix up a variety of items and if you do want to go all out on a par ticular trend then make sure it still has an essence of you in the mix. If we can help with any of your interior need’s, then please make contact and we are happy to chat.
