Not all sun protection is created equal

-

Summer is coming and so is the potential for ultra-violet (UV) exposure. Most people remember to put sunscreen on their skin to reduce the risk of skin cancer, but many forget about protecting their vulnerable eyes.

There are many forms of sun protection to choose from that will give your eyes the defence they need from New Zealand’s harsh sun – sunglasses, polarized sunglasses, photochromatic lenses, clip on lenses, Fitover sunglasses, UV400 clear coatings on their optical lenses, UV protectant contact lenses and photochromatic contact lenses. Each of these option offer differing amounts of protection to your eyes and the delicate skin around the edges – so it is important to work out which option will protect your eyes the best, but still integrate easily into your lifestyle.

New Zealand does not have a mandatory UV sun protection standard to which all sunglasses need to adhere to, there are only set guidelines. This means that sunglasses sold in New Zealand aren’t legally required to offer any protection from damaging UV rays (which can cause cancer). Where possible, it is ideal to purchase your sun protection from a trusted optometrist practice. Wanganui Eyecare and Eyes on Victoria, carry a vast range of sunglasses, Fitovers, sun clips and many other sun protection options that are fortified with a UV protectant coating - allowing you to enjoy the New Zealand sun while knowing your eyes are protected.
