Nod to the people of Ukraine

Flying the flag and showing support for beleaguered nation

-

With no fanfare, no fuss, there are people in Whanganui who have the beleaguered people of Ukraine in their thoughts. Mike Buchanan flies a Ukraine flag over his building; Rick Rudd has set up a small display of the work of two potters in his Quartz Museum of Studio Ceramics.

Each, in their own way, showing their support for that country being bashed by the Russian bully.

Rick’s display in Ukraine colours are three John Parker bottles in blue with an Andrea du Chatenier sculpture in yellow. A Ukraine flag tops it off.

“It’s just a nod,” says Rick. “The corrugations in the bottom piece reflect the corrugations in the top.” It’s art and it sends a message. There must be more examples of this out there in Whanganui.

As a footnote, the Ukraine flag flying from Mike Buchanan’s plumbing shop has been stolen. Perhaps the thief would like to explain his/her motives.

A new flag has been ordered and will be flying again soon.

We’ve got a new look

You’ll have noticed a slight change to our front page starting this week.

The new look is part of changes being made across the NZME Community Publication Network to bring you a local newspaper that continues to be an informative and interesting read and helps us better support local businesses in reaching local readers.

More people are reading community newspapers. It was recently announced our titles saw a 9 per cent growth in readership compared with the same period last year*.

The newly formed Community Publication Network is made up of 16 local newspapers that all play a critical role in keeping Kiwis connected and in the know in their own communities by covering local issues, news, opportunities, achievements, heroes, events, businesses and more.

The “h” in our masthead represents our role as part of New Zealand’s Herald, the country’s most powerful news brand.

“But we’re still a local paper brought to you by proudly local people, telling local stories.

Keep an eye out for more changes and improvements over the next few months.
