Whanganui Midweek

Band emerges with new sound

-

Space Gallery’s walls will come alive on May 26 with the sounds of new music. Metamorphosis will be performing from 7pm in the back performing space. They will be featuring new bigger and more exciting pieces of music. Composer Rick Baum has been working on pieces which go beyond the American Song Book style for which the group is known.

People forget that Rick has been heavily influenced by groups like Return To Forever, and Weather Report, as well as bands like Black Sabbath and Metallica.

Fear not, the band is not changing it’s style to heavy metal, but rather feeding on the type of energy those bands bring to a performance.

The idea is to give the audience a total aural experience similar to what they would get at a Weather Report concert, or a show by guitarist Pat Metheney.

Metamorphosis has been performing around Whanganui and Palmerston North for the past 10 years. Originally comprised of pianist and composer Rick Baum and bassist John Scudder, they have had many different lineups during that time.

For this iteration they have conscripted Finnian Sinclair, a Year 12 student, on drums.

He comes from a different angle which gives the whole show a new energy and style.

He is not afraid to take risks and take the music to a different level. It is proving to be more exciting than anything they have done before.

Tickets are available at Space Studio Gallery, 18 St Hill St, or from the Events tab on the Space Studio Gallery website.
