It is really important to remind people that it is ok to be different from others and it is not okay to bully people just beacause they are not the same as you.

And what is Pink Shirt Day?

By wearing your pink shirt and taking part, you will be helping to stamp out bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusion. Spread aroha and kindness and end bullying in your school/kura.

You can celebrate Pink Shirt Day at a time that suits you and keep the kaupapa going all year round.

What is bullying?

Bullying can take all forms and has some specific features that make it more much more serious and harmful.

Bullying is deliberate involving a misuse of power in a relationship. It is usually not a one off, it is repeated or has the potential to be repeated over time. It can involve behaviour that can cause harm that is not part of everyday growing up.

Why are certain people targeted?

While all youg people are potential targets of bullying, some groups can experience higher rates.

Boys, students from disadvantaged or immigrant backgrounds and low achieving students are at higher risk. This is not just here in our own country, but this is happening globally.

Students who are part of the rainbow community also seem to be targetsfor bullies.

And there is cyberbullying, which once again targets young people. This can take many forms including, name calling, repeated unwanted messages, spreading rumours and lies, fake accounts used to harrass peiople, exclusion from social activities and embarrassing photos.

In the workplace

Every year, one in five workers in New Zealand report being bullied in the workplace . Your workplace can join the movement, so that your workplace feels a safe and caring environment.
