Whanganui Midweek

WHANGANUI HAPPENINGS NEW

-

Artists Helene Hall and Katie Hedgman-Dalton are teaming up to exhibit new works from their individual studios this October at Eightyeight Putiki.

Helene’s new body of work features exquisite gouache paintings of New Zealand butterflies and is accompanied by the launch of her 2024 calendar. A graphic designer by day, Helene works across many mediums – digitally, mixed media and gouache painting - and features butterflies in her colourful stationery line. “(But) the physical act of brushing paint onto paper has evolved these into real pieces,” Helene comments. Katie’s mixed media pieces – referred to by her as ‘bookery’ form her offering in this dual show. She combines her love of stitch, texture and text in a scattering of handmade books that beg to be touched and explored. “I’ve included a favourite poem by Kahlil Gibran and some of my own writing,” Katie states, “to accompany the visual and tactile narrative.

“It’s going to be a show of extremes,’’ she adds. ‘’Helene’s deliberate brushwork and use of colour, and my (almost) chaotic marks and more sombre palette are a bit of a contrast. And we both look forward to sharing it with you.”’ The exhibition will run for four weeks. Opening night is Thursday, October 12, 5.30pm-7pm, Helene and Katie would love to see you there.
