Whanganui Midweek

Music improvisation, hope and happiness

-

The International Jazz Day (IJD) movement is another vehicle for us in Aotearoa New Zealand to celebrate our freedom and connect through live spontaneous music.

IJD is an initiative that began in 2011 when jazz legend Herbie Hancock became a Unesco Goodwill Ambassador for intercultural dialogue. His jazz institute in America joined with Unesco to push forward an agenda that highlights jazz music’s role in uniting people all around the world. “Each year on April 30, this international art form is recognised for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity and respect for human rights and human dignity” (jazz day).

We are Whanganui is the only city in the country to recognise this important kaupapa all year round and have been actively engaged with major events since 2018. Now, thanks to Tony Sundeman @ Porridge Watson we showcase musicians playing improvised music on the third Sunday of the month.

These IJD Jam Sessions are unpredictable and entertaining. Pianist Chris Dann leads a house band, and local musicians are welcome to step up and join in. There have been instrumentalists playing bassoon, ukelele, flute and didgeridoo.

Vocalists, saxophonists, trumpeters and guitarists are a regular feature, including members of our Whanganui Jazz Orchestra.

What makes the music exciting is that it is completely spontaneous, requiring negotiation and communication on the part of the musicians. That is the same recipe often used to create positive change, and the music showcases this process.

Come down for a drink or a snack and listen to some live improvised music in good company.

The festive season will be in full swing, and the music is sure to echo our hopes for a happy new year.
