WHANGANUI HAPPENINGS

-

Museum staff will lead a session of classic games and traditional Ma¯ ori games at Pa¯ kaitore Moutua Gardens on Thursday 18 and January 25 from 11am to 12.30pm. The two sessions will include Ma¯ ori games that challenge dexterity and speed, plus passive games for younger children. Children and adults can get involved with eggand-spoon racing, sack racing, Tugof-War, Rakau (sticks), P¯ırori (hoops), and Teka (flax darts). Pou Manaaki/Visitor Experience Lead, Max Reeves said the events are an opportunity to take advantage of the good weather to host activities outside of the Museum; “This is something we’ve run before with success. We like to enliven our heritage locations, such as Pa¯ kaitore.” “Summertime is a great opportunity for us to offer some active programmes. People have been playing games and getting out in nice weather for as long as they’ve existed, and it’s great to be able to engage with this side of history.”

Families are invited to bring a picnic, a bottle of water and a hat, and join in with games in exchange for a koha gold coin donation. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Details can be found on the Museum website wrm.org.nz and on the Facebook page. Whanganui Regional Museum Summer Holiday Programme January 2024
