Rain kills all games in Whanganui

Horowhenua-Kapiti teams move up table after rain-shortened Saturday matches

-

The club social media post of the Property Brokers United team really summed it up — “they say if want to break a drought you schedule a cricket game”.

United’s home match with the travelling Burger King Red Star was abandoned by wet weather both overnight and then on Saturday morning, which leaves both Whanganui teams in the Coastal Challenge Cup still without a positive result after three rounds of play.

Having also been rained out against each other in Round 1, United and Wanganui Vet Services Marist will now prepare to face the might of the Horowhenua-Kapiti teams, who were able to get through rainshortened fixtures on Saturday.

And it was the two teams yet to record a victory who were victorious, which means every side including Red Star, by virtue of their big win over Marist in Round 2, have taken maximum points, leaving the Whanganui sides at the foot-end of the table.

Eleven runs in the final over including a boundary off the secondlast ball from their No 9 batsmen saw Weraroa CC snatch a two-wicket victory from Kapiti Old Boys in a 27-over match at the domain.

At Donnelly Park, defending Coastal champions Levin Old Boys hit a roadblock in their quest for a threepeat in the form of a potentially resurgent Roofbox Paraparaumu, who bowled them out for a low total and then crawled their way to a narrow two-wicket win.

The rain-out in Whanganui also saw the abandonment of the Cricket Whanganui P2-40 and P3-30 over matches.

The one side that did get a result was the Matt Burke Engineering Marton P3’s, as the Whanganui Collegiate P3 side had already forfeited their game at Centennial Park.
