Whanganui Midweek

An Enticing Entrance

- Rach and Bex

What a busy month Whanganui had in March with the Artist Open Studios taking place over two weekends and the Home and Garden tour also taking place. I was fortunate enough to be able to do both with friends who were down from Auckland, and it was lovely to view our gorgeous city through their eyes. We really are very lucky to have so much talent and creativity in our beautiful city. This month I want to talk about entrances and how important it is to not neglect your entrance on the outside or the inside. Often these days houses have internal garaging and front doors are not used as regularly as they once were, but it does not mean they should be forgotten. For the exterior of your entrance make sure it is appealing with a fresh door mat to welcome guests. There is nothing worse than a well-loved door mat that is falling apart. A creative door colour that is going to make your entrance catch people’s eye is an easy way to add a little difference between your home and the house next door. If choosing a door colour, make sure it sits nicely with the era of the house. I recently visited a beautiful grand home with a bright yellow door and unfortunately the colour was jarring in contrast to the homes architectural feature’s, the door frame had also been painted so it became overpowering.

If the colour had been a few shades lighter and only the front door had been painted in the yellow, it would have looked stunning. If you have space add larger pots with a variety of planting. Think spiller, filler and hero when filling your pots so you get layers of texture and colour in one pot for interest instead of lots of small pots which can look cluttered and messy. Inside your entrance depending on what space, you have to work with think about colour and texture. Colour can be brought in with paint or wallpaper and you can be subtle or bold depending on the flavour of your home and what feel you wish to create. Do you have room for a console table and mirror? Is there space for artwork? Do you need a rug to soften the space and add some warmth on hard floors? Is there room for plants as plants will always bring a space to life. Will a feature light work and if so, have a think about if it will be in the centre of the space or to the side of a mirror or above the console etc. You can have some fun and be creative in your entrance as it will set the mood for the rest of your home. Whatever style and flavour you do in your entrance it will set the tone for the rest of your house so embrace it and make it impactful.
