No protection

Whangarei Report - - NEWS / OPINION -

Housing New Zealand continues to steam roll ahead with their plans to develop Puriri Park into a micro housing community at the expense of many old trees and a beautiful green space, used by Whanga¯rei citizens for over 50 years. Now it appears WDC is sitting very much in their pockets and stand to make a tidy sum for each dwelling to be built on the site.

No wonder they have failed to protect this park. Despite denying all knowledge of the interest and purchase of the park by HNZ it has now come to light they have known for a very long time that this was happening.

Some council employees have even been told to deny all knowledge of it even though they have known about it happening. I hope when it is time to elect our next councillors the public remember, how in this case and I’m sure in others, they have let us down. They are meant to “make decisions that will promote community well-being, now and for the future” but there seems very little evidence this has happened and we stand to lose an incredibly valuable park in Whanga¯ rei. _ F Watson Whangarei
