GARDEN TASKS

Whangarei Report - - GARDENING -

Give ‘em a feed

Tomatoes, peppers and courgettes will appreciate a weekly feed of liquid tomato food or a flower and fruit fertiliser.

Watch for mildew

When powdery mildew appears on your annuals, courgettes and other plants, give them a spray with a mix of 5g bicarbonate of soda in 600ml of water.

Get dead-heading

Don’t let dead-heading be a tiresome task. Spend a warm lazy afternoon doing it, and you’ll be rewarded with plants that make an extra effort.

Water your plants

Water and feed all your container plants before Christmas to see them through the break. If you’re going to be away for a few days, organise watering — even an upended plastic bottle will do the trick.
