You may remember her as Melissa McCarthy’s sister on Mike&Molly, but in Katy Mixon’s latest show, she’s taking centre stage. Her new comedy American

Housewife follows the life of Katie, a strong-willed mother trying to raise her not-soperfect family in a wealthy Connecticut town.

The 36-year-old Southern belle had just wrapped filming when we caught up with her to chat about babies and her big break.

Congratulations! We heard you’re having a boy. How was filMing with a buMP?

I’m about to give birth in five weeks – I’m so huge! It wasn’t planned, but my fiancé and I couldn’t be more thrilled. The hours at work were pretty crazy. Basically, it’s a 4.30am wake-up call and I work a 14-hour day, which means I have to film eight scenes every day. It’s nonstop, but now we’ve finished filming, I can finally recover. I’m blessed to have this job, but I was so pregnant and it was crazy.

How did you feel when you found out you’d landed your own show?

Oh, honey, I was overjoyed! I just finished filming Mike

&Molly last January and four days later, I walked into the room of American-Housewife. It was that quick. It was just an incredible moment. I couldn’t be more grateful. I was so ready to spread my wings with a new show.

What kind of feedback have you had froM fans?

It’s been the most magical thing ever. People relate to Katie so much – they say she’s their spirit animal. I just met with a lot of mummy bloggers at a network event and when I was talking to them, they all said, “You’re in my head. That’s me; that’s what I go through every day.” That’s
