Back in 1992, there was plenty of international showbiz news keeping us busy and buzzing at Woman’sDay. Princess Diana separated from Prince Charles after 11 years of marriage and dear Fergie was caught having her toes sucked by her Texan beau. Courtney Love thought she’d found nirvana when she wed Kurt Cobain and Whitney Houston declared she will always love Bobby Brown as they wed. On the telly, we couldn’t get enough of

Roseanne and Murphy Brown, while Wayne’sWorld was the movie on everyone’s lips and it was “Achy Breaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus that was moving our hips. But two years after

Woman’sDay launched its New Zealand edition, the new magazine player was hungry for more local stars. And it was ShortlandStreet that was the answer to our prayers.

Despite the critics’ initial slaying of the new soap and reports of a national cultural cringe soon after the May 1992 debut, Woman’sDay was right with the series from the start, showcasing the stars week in and week out. Viewers and readers loved our glossy shoots and were hugely curious to know about the personal lives behind the characters they saw on screen.

The close ties Woman’sDay and ShortlandStreet formed helped each other become the number-one magazine and TV show in the country. And 25 years on, ShortlandStreet is still our readers’ favourite show. Kiwis love seeing themselves reflected on screen and the escapism that the soap’s tales of love, laughter and tragedy provides – the same reason why readers love Woman’sDay.

This week, we celebrate the joy that is ShortlandStreet. To all those who have been a part of the show over the last 25 years, thank you. We salute you!
