Editor’s letter
Ilove my daily ritual of the drive to school with the kids, then on to work. It doesn’t take me long – 15 minutes on a good day – but I treasure that little window with my children. We’re all morning people, and that ride is full of chatter and puts us in a positive frame of mind for the day ahead.
The car radio has always been part of that family ritual. There’s a little bit of argy-bargy over what station depending on the music – and I like to flick to Newstalk ZB or Radio New Zealand at news time – but we three have all been united in our love of Polly Gillespie and Grant Kereama when it comes to the chitty chatty bit. I guess I’m slightly biased because Polly is such a special part of Woman’s Day as our beloved columnist – and she’s become a dear friend. But bias aside, Polly and Grant do warm, funny and fabulous radio! My family followed them from ZM to The Hits, and listened to our on-air schoolrun companions through their happiness and heartache – even a marriage split.
When they disappeared off air this year, my kids and I were shocked, but we also just missed them terribly.
So I’m delighted to announce this week (page 10) that they’re back on radio as of July 3 with The Rova All Day Breakfast with Polly & Grant via a new app – and on More FM from July 1 on Saturday mornings (6am-10am) in many regions. It’s a big yay from me!
I had a fan-girl moment when I finally met Grant at our photo shoot because I feel like I know him so well via the radio – and know he’s been through more than his fair share of ups and downs in recent years. I just had to give him a hug. What a good man. Read our cover story to understand why I say this.
Another wonderful girlfriend, and a former Woman’s Day editor, Wendyl Nissen, will also be gracing our airwaves with a new
Afternoon Talk show on Radio Live (12pm-3pm) from this week. I know listeners will love her.
I’m truly excited radio bosses have recognised the brilliance of Polly and Wendyl, and given them both these fab new opportunities. They’ve both totally earned it. You go, girls!
Have a great week.
