The Kiwi actor reveal show he was forced to lie to those around him

In September last year, Kiwi actor Matt Whelan had to listen to what felt like everyone in the world rave about season two of the hit Netflix crime series Narcos.

While his friends gushed about the gritty show that documents the fight against the Colombian cocaine trade in the ’80s, Matt had a big secret he was hiding. The GoGirls star had just got the new role of Agent Daniel Van Ness.

“I was so happy and it was so surreal – I couldn’t believe that I had gotten a role on such an incredible show,” recalls Matt as he sits down with Woman’s

Day on a brief visit home. “I remember getting the call from my agent and she was so thrilled for me, but I wasn’t able to say anything. I had to keep it really quiet.”

He scored the part after recording two auditions and having a Skype interview with the producer Eric Newman. Matt didn’t meet anyone in person, but before he knew it, he was off to Colombia for seven months of shooting.

Luckily for the actor, he had the support of his wife Danielle, who was “ecstatic” for him.

“Being away, of course I got a bit homesick,” he concedes. “But I have a really great family and wife, so I felt very blessed.”

It wasn’t long before Matt found family amongst the cast and bonded with all his fellow co-stars.
