When Jennifer Aniston publicly announced the end of her two-year marriage to film director Justin Theroux in February, she insisted it was a lovingly made decision between two best mates who promised they would continue their “cherished friendship”.
But behind the scenes, the 49-year-old star is struggling to cope in the humiliating aftermath of her second divorce, confiding in pals that she’s “totally overwhelmed” by photos of her ex holidaying in Europe with actress Emma Stone, 29.
She’s now apparently relying on daily therapy sessions to get her through. “Jen is at rock bottom,” tells a close source. “She feels betrayed and can’t believe how fast Justin appears to have moved on. It’s almost like he’s purposefully trying to hurt her and she can’t see what she did to deserve this.
“She and Justin were supposed to be still working out the terms of their separation and had previously talked about biding their time before moving on with other people. But Justin is totally going against that.”
According to our source, watching Justin parade dates with a string of young starlets has been hard enough, but it’s the flaunting of his new relationship with his Maniac
co-star Emma that hurts the most – particularly as she was an old friend of Jennifer’s.
Despite photos of Justin and Emma on nights out in the US and sharing dinner dates – and even a hotel room – on a beach holiday in the South of France, the two vehemently deny they are anything more than close friends.
But Jennifer’s not buying it. “She saw the photos,” confides an insider close to the Horrible
Bosses star. “Anyone can tell there’s sparks there. They’re not fooling anyone.
“This is really cruel of Justin and Emma, and it shows an utter lack of respect for Jen. She refuses to play the fool again, especially not for Justin – who many believe would still be a Hollywood C-lister if it wasn’t for her.”
Woman’s Day can reveal the furious actress has decided to seek her revenge, starting with a makeover to prove just what Justin’s missing.
Big changes
Insiders say Jennifer, who turns 50 in February next year, has spent thousands since her split on cosmetic treatments, personal trainers, stylists and dietitians.
And when she stepped out in Los Angeles last week at a benefit dinner with her best pal Courteney Cox, the results were clear to see, with the star looking chic in highwaisted black trousers and debuting a sexy new hairstyle.
“Jen might be hurting, but she’s looking better than she has in years,” tells an insider. “She wants to feel better about herself and thinks she’s at a point in her life where she needs and deserves a little boost. She’s allegedly spent close to $200,000 overhauling her look and it’s basically a big middle finger to Justin. She’s been having anti-ageing IV drips, $7000 diamond facials and $5000 Evian water baths.”
Despite her pain, Jennifer – who recently fired her longtime hairdresser after she apparently discovered he was still in touch with Justin – is believed to be enjoying the occasional date with
Brokeback Mountain star Jake Gyllenhaal. The pair were first linked several weeks ago after Jake admitted to having a huge crush on the actress.
“Jen knows better than anyone that another serious romance is the last thing she needs right now,” reports our insider. “But she can’t shake the desire to get revenge on Justin and hooking up with a Hollywood heavyweight would be hard to beat. She likes Jake – they certainly have chemistry. So they’re taking things slowly and enjoying each other’s company.”
Meanwhile, Jennifer is on the verge of signing up for a chat with her talk-showhost friend Ellen DeGeneres, during which she plans to lift the lid on her divorce. Our source says she’s fed up with keeping tight-lipped while 46-year-old Justin arrogantly flaunts his flirtations with Emma in her face.
“She’s so angry, she wants to go all-out and make him suffer some of the embarrassment she’s had to endure,” says our insider.
“Jen’s also negotiating a huge interview with a glossy magazine, where she wants to tell people what really happened between them. Jen knows how powerful her words are when she does speak out, so she’s carefully plotting out exactly what she’s going to say now. Justin should be quaking in his boots.
“She says it’s her turn to get her own back on him and when he sees what she’s got planned for him, he’ll regret causing so much humiliation and embarrassment – not to mention ripping her heart to shreds.”
