“Katie wanted to pave the way for her life and her child’s life,” says the source, calling the actress a “strong woman” and “one of the best mothers” in the world. “She’s worked her tail off since the divorce and has finally gotten to a place where she can be her own person.”
But now some fear she’s throwing it all away. “No-one knows why she stays with a man who is consistently disrespectful,” says our insider, referring to Jamie, who is also a father to Corinne, 24. “She was counting on him to be the man she could spend her life with, but every time she starts getting close, he backs away.
“Katie wants to get married again and even have another child before it’s too late. She doesn’t deserve this. Everyone just wants her to take care of herself and to be happy. But she won’t let go of Jamie. They’ve fought about it, with Katie threatening to walk, but she always comes back.”
Despite the actor’s badboy ways, Katie is “smitten”, the insider tells us. “She has fun with him when they’re together.” In fact, it’s Jamie’s fun-loving personality that drew Katie to him in the first place.
“Jamie does amazing impressions of just about anyone, and it’s completely mesmerising and entertaining,” one of his mates says, adding that after five years with super-serious Tom, Katie was desperate for a laugh.
Though they’re rarely seen out and about, having never been photographed together in public until last September, they do “see each other more than people would think”, reports our insider, adding that Jamie often visits Katie and Suri at their home in New York.
“Jamie does care for Katie,” insists the insider, “but the way he acts in public doesn’t match up to how Katie should be cared for. If you really love someone, then why are you embarrassing them like this?”
Still, Katie can’t seem to quit Jamie – and vice versa.
“When Katie and Jamie are together, it works,” our insider explains of their unconventional relationship. “It’s weird, but it’s what works for them.”
