recalls. “My husband was with me and when we heard the first little cry, we were in tears. It was overwhelming.

“Having Frida has been a long road, but she’s our total joy. That feeling of having a clan, a family, is amazing. I still have to pinch myself.”

Brigitte met Mattia in 2004, when she was dining at a

restaurant where he was working as a waiter. Despite initial concerns about their 16-year age gap, they married in 2006 and soon embarked on 10 years of gruelling fertility treatment.

Although they were told their chances of conceiving were “slim to zero” due to Brigitte’s age, she insists,

“I never gave up hope, even when just about everyone else did.”

The doting mum adds, “It wasn’t that I needed another child – it’s just that when you love someone very much, the biggest wish is to share your joy and love by having a baby together. I know it’s very selfish and you should be happy just to have a relationship, but it’s natural.”

Of the criticism she has received, the actress smiles, “I can understand that people are a bit sceptical, but how many men have their first children in their 50s and 60s? Nobody doubts them or questions them. This is my life.”

Brigitte says she felt “absolutely amazing” during her pregnancy, with no morning sickness or mood swings, and though she’s not breastfeeding, she’s taking a more hands-on approach with Frida.

“With my boys, I had a lot of help, but I’ve decided to really bond with her, so I’m doing things differently and spending a lot more time with her,” she explains.

“When I had my first baby, I was 20 and had no idea what I was doing, but now I’m super-mature – like a good wine, darling – so I want to do everything that I hadn’t done properly before.”
