On a week-long solo visit to Africa, William quipped that he was delighted to be getting a “few good uninterrupted nights” of sleep away from his three children, adding that his wife Kate was “immensely jealous” of the trip.
A passionate advocate for animals, the prince toured Namibia, Tanzania and Kenya to draw attention to the illegal wildlife trade and promote anti-poaching measures. “This is an issue very close to my heart,” William announced in a speech in Windhoek, where he lamented figures that show a rhino is killed for its horn every seven hours.
In Namibia, the prince awoke at 5am to look for rare black rhino in the wild, finally finding one of the critically endangered creatures after five hours of searching. He had more luck at Tanzania’s Mkomazi National Park, where he even fed one of the reserve’s 50 rhinos from his 4WD.
In Kenya, William met a local soccer team and hugged a player who was named after him. The country is a special place for the prince, who proposed to Kate in Kenya in 2010 after seven years of on-off romance.
