Bangs IN THE NIGHT

Fireworks drive our furry friends crackers

-

Bright lights and loud noises delight some humans, but the distress fireworks can cause for our furry friends is devastating. Every year, the SPCA receives dozens of calls about injured or frightened animals, missing pets and occasionally, abuse.

Fireworks can terrorise animals – some have a real phobia of them and should be treated with medication (pet owners should speak to their vets for options before Guy Fawkes night).

Top tips

Make a plan ahead of Guy Fawkes. Both cats and dogs should be microchipped and have a collar with an identification tag showing your contact details. If your pet panics and runs away, it will help to reunite you.

Exercise your dog early in the day to avoid being out

during dusk when fireworks could be set off. Ensure your furry friend has somewhere comforting to hide such as a crate or a box where they feel safe to retreat to. Try a compression wrap for dogs, like a ThunderShirt.

Move horses and farm animals away from fireworks. Make sure all fences are secure and stable horses where possible. Do this well in advance so the animals have a chance to get used to their new surroundings. Don’t forget small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs or chickens. Have them tucked away or inside for the night.

Never let fireworks off close to animals.

Stay home with your pet – he or she will be less stressed with someone they trust close by (if possible, make sure your pet has the company of other animals they are familiar with). Keep your pets indoors – they won’t see the flashes and the bangs will be muffled. Close doors and windows, and draw the curtains. Turn up the volume on your radio or TV to help drown out loud bangs with familiar sounds.

Comfort your pet – this could mean cuddling them if it helps or giving them space, depending on what he or she needs. Try to behave in a calm and reassuring manner. Take special care of elderly or nervous animals. Never punish your little pals when they are scared. This will only make their fear and stress levels worse.
