Three’s a charm for Zara and Mike

The sporty royals are expanding their brood

On a visit to the Gold Coast, former England rugby captain Mike Tindall made the most of the hot weather with a spot of surfing, later declaring, “That’s a great cure for jetlag – I can recommend it. I’ve only surfed once before and I was so bad at it, but I managed to stand up this time.”

However, on dry land, it was his royal wife Zara who had everyone talking, with her curvy figure sparking speculation the couple are expecting their third child. If so, it’ll be a case of déjà vu for the pair, who were expecting daughter Lena, now six months, when they holidayed in Australia this time last year.

But with the horse-mad Olympic medallist competing in a charity polo match at the Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Carnival, for which she is an ambassador, those close to the

family suggests this is unlikely. However, we’re told baby number three is definitely on the cards for Zara, 37, and Mike, 40, who are also parents to daughter Mia, four.

“Despite only having had Lena six months ago, Zara’s told pals how she and Mike are ready to start trying for a third, and she’s revealed how they’re hoping for a hattrick this year,” says a source close to the royal, speaking exclusively to Woman’s Day.

Zara reportedly also told her family over Christmas that she wants to join her cousin Prince Harry and his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, “on the baby train” – and she’s desperate for a son this time.

“She hopes that she can get their much longed-for boy with their third child,” reports our source. “Zara joked that despite Mike’s best efforts, it’s not looking like the girls will follow in his rugby-loving footsteps, so he needs a son to share his passion and balance things out a bit. She also revealed how Mia regularly asks them when she’s getting a baby brother, so the pressure is on!”

Taking it easy

However, Zara remains cautious after suffering two devastating miscarriages, one in 2016 – just after she confirmed the pregnancy – and another “really early on” shortly before conceiving Lena.

“It’s been a horrible road, but we’ve come out the end of it and it makes you a stronger family,” says Zara, who lives with Mike and their children on her mum Princess Anne’s Gatcombe Estate in the Cotswolds.

Paying tribute to how her husband handled the terrible news, she continues, “Mike’s incredible. It’s hard for the guys too. It’s different for us [women] because we’re carrying the child, but for guys, I guess it’s that helpless feeling, which must be incredibly high and horrible for them. At the end of the day, they’ve lost a child too.”

The retired rugby star has himself said that eldest daughter Mia was their “saving grace” during this difficult time, revealing, “However down we feel, she will come running up in our faces.”

Our source says Zara and Mike will stop at three children “unless they’re blessed with a surprise”, and that the Olympian will lean on the Duchess of Cambridge for hacks on handling life with three children.

“Kate’s the one who motivated her to have another baby now and keep the age gap close, so she’s hoping she falls pregnant quickly and can follow in Kate’s footsteps this year.”

Baby steps! Mike takes some lessons from a local. “I managed to stand up this time,” the rugby star jokes.
