Speaking to Woman’s Day on the phone from her Nashville home, actress Katie Stevens still can’t quite believe her new show is about to premiere all the way here in New Zealand.

“That’s so amazing,” gushes the former American Idol singer and Faking It star. “The support for this series has been crazy!”

Katie fronts the addictive new drama The Bold Type, about three girls in their 20s working for a glossy women’s magazine in New York. It’s been dubbed the new Sex and the City, which is a big name to live up to, but Katie thinks they’ve got what it takes.

What was your first impression of the series?

I was in a meeting with the network and they were telling me they had this new show that was kind of like SexandtheCity meets The

Devil We ars Prada, which are two of my favourite things. I immediately read the script and really connected to my character Jane right off the bat. I also loved the female empowerment and how it showed that your 20s can be messy but that you can draw strength from that mess.

How important are the strong, sassy women?

It really is key to the show’s success. Mothers are watching with their daughters and people connect with it at all different ages. Everyone can relate to this idea of navigating a messy time in your life, and trying to figure out who you are and who you want to be.

Did you ever expect it to be so successful?

Any show that you’re on, you hope it will be successful. When I read the script, I knew there was something special about it, so for people to be such big fans of the show, it really touched my heart. Now instead of people asking me, “Are you on TV?” they recognise me by name and tell me how much they love TheBoldType.

What’s the best part of working on this show?

I have become like sisters with my co-stars Meghann Fahy and Aisha Dee. And the crew of this show is so amazing. To goo to work every day knowingng that we’re all creatingg something really special andd you really enjoy what you’ree doing, that’s been the bestest part. We’re really proudd of it, but I’m more proudud of the people I get to workork with.

What’s something most ingmost people wouldn’ t know’ t know about you?

I’m half Portuguese, ese, and I was raised to speakpeak both English and Portuguese. uguese. I’m also a little bitt like my character in that I have some type-A tendencies dencies and I’m a hopelessss romantic!
