Woman’s Day (New Zealand)

When we asked an online panel of Woman’s Day readers about their role models in conjunction with International Women’s Day, I was chuffed to see cover star Toni Street was among the top 10. She’s been wildly successful in her career, but her family comes first and finding a balance has been a struggle she’s not ashamed to admit. Throw in a health crisis or two, and Toni (page 8) has had tough times, yet she remains positive and optimistic about the world – and is currently juggling a job she loves with the joy of a beautiful baby boy born via a surrogate. I admire her hugely.

You voted our remarkable Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern as your number-one role model and, regardless of your politics, I'm not surprised. She became the world's youngest-ever female head of government – and just three months later, announced she was pregnant. Her ability to succeed as a PM while having Neve has made her a role model for women around the world. You can check out the other women readers are inspired by on page 32. I should point out that a lot of women voted for “my mum” as their role model, which was lovely. I agree!

This year's theme for International Women's Day on March 8 is #BalanceforBetter. While it's about celebrating the achievements of women, it's also a chance to work towards achieving gender balance in the workplace. I'm proud to work for a company where that is reality.

I'm aware that finding “me time” is one of the hardest things for women juggling careers and family. That's why Woman'sDay is such a treat – it's a rare escape from our busy worlds. Wellness columnist Gemma McCaw has some wonderful tips on how to find balance on page 68.

One of my favourite ways to take time out is to get together with a girlfriend for a good old gasbag. Check out our conversation cards in the middle of this week's issue – they'll soon inspire great chat. Tear them out and keep them close by – perfect for a catchup with the girls!
