Ahigh intake of the sweet stuff causes blood sugar levels to shoot up, giving us a feel-good rush, followed by a crash that leaves us tired, grumpy and reaching for more sugary foods. It’s a vicious cycle that’s contributi­ng to our obesity epidemic, as well as health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

But here’s the not-so-sweet truth – sugar is hard to kick and it’s hiding in almost everything we eat, not just the obvious culprits. Dressings, cereals and breads are often sugar-laden too. If you really want to give up sugar, going cold turkey is best. But if you’re after a gentler approach, start by giving up packaged foods and make all your meals from scratch.
