Painting three ways FOR MOTHER’S DAY
Add that personal touch to Mum’s gift with these clever ideas from Emily Somerville-Ryan
1 CHECKER BOARD
Freshen up your antipasto platters and add some life to your parties with this fun up-cycled gingham serving board. Tape around the entire edge of your board with washi masking tape. Next, paint the front of the board with two coats of Resene Poured Milk. When thoroughly dry, tape stripes across the front of the board with masking tape, horizontally from left to right. Leave a tape-width space between each strip. Paint two coats of Resene Grey Chateau over the exposed pieces of horizontal board. Once dry, peel off the tape to reveal a grey and white striped board. Now tape the washi masking tape the same way as before but vertically this time, from top to bottom. Paint two coats of Resene Tuna over the exposed pieces of vertical board. Once dry, leaving the tape in place. Tape another set of stripes, horizontally again from left to right with the same spacing as before. Paint two coats of Resene Double Foundry over the remaining pieces of exposed board. When dry, peel off all the tape and seal with two coats of Resene Aquaclear waterborne urethane varnish.
2 LOVE BEADS
Draw around the centre of 10 large beads. Paint one side of each with two coats of Resene paint. I’ve painted two beads in each colour using Resene Kumutoto, Resene Fringy Flower, Resene Bardot, Resene Glorious and Resene Gelato. Paint 13 smaller beads in either Resene Double Foundry or Resene Poured Milk. Leave two unpainted. Once dry, seal each bead with two coats of Resene Aquaclear waterborne urethane varnish. Thread both sets of beads onto leather string.
3 GIFT WRAP
Paint a large piece of brown paper in two coats of Resene Double Foundry. Once dry, paint sporadic organic shapes in
Resene Poured Milk. Let it dry thoroughly then layer with a combination of colours, completely drying between each colour. I have used
Resene Kumutoto, Resene Fringy Flower, Resene Bardot, Resene Glorious, Resene Gelato, Resene Glamour Puss
and Resene Bali Hai.
As a finishing touch, using a fine brush, paint clusters of white dots randomly here and there across your entire wrap in Resene Poured Milk.
