There are shades of The Crucible in this adaptation of the novel by Sarah Perry. Set in 1893, it stars Claire Danes as a widow who moves from London to Essex when she hears talk of a mythical beast. As science and religion collide, she becomes the subject of suspicion, especially when locals begin to believe her presence summoned the snake.
