NEW LOOK NEEDED

Hi Jay-Jay,

I have drama about what I wear and how I present myself. After three years of changes and, of course, the pandemic, life has been tough and I haven’t really put myself first.

My frizzy hair is usually in a bun or ponytail and I tend to wear a lot of black. I know it’s time for a change, but I just don’t know where to start, plus I’m on a tight budget, so new clothes and haircuts are out of the question at this point. Thanks for listening to my problems!

Kia ora, Michelle!

Oh, my gosh, this makes me laugh because it sounds just like me! So excuse me if this advice sounds like the blind leading the blind.

I am known to wear a lot of black. I wear it for a few reasons: Because I’m not that skilled in the fashion department, so it saves me from the struggle to match colours and patterns. Also, it makes me look slimmer than I am. And if I wear black, I don’t stand out as much as when I wear colour – I feel like I get enough attention in life without my clothing screaming, “Look at me!” I also like keeping things simple, and throwing on a black dress or black tee and jeans is easy. Maybe you’re like me in that regard too.

But here’s something not many people have noticed yet – I am wearing a lot more colour. I decided it was time to embrace it. I started with coloured tees and now I have advanced to dresses. I stick with block colours and don’t do anything too bright, and I’m getting used to it now!

I think you could do the same. You don’t have to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. In fact, you don’t have to spend too much money. Maybe you could swap a few clothes with your friends, go op-shopping, or check out the coloured dresses and tops at

KMart or H&M. You only really need one or two formal or dressy outfits, so you don’t have to go crazy while money is tight. Ask your friends and family which colours suit you best.

As for your hair, have you ever had a Keratin treatment? It’s life-changing! It will smooth out your frizz and leave you with beautiful, soft hair. It’s a little bit pricey but can last up to three months – and you can often find really good discounts on websites like Grabone.co.nz.

Invest in a good haircut, be brave with a splash of colour and you’ll be looking a feeling like a new you in no time!

Good luck, Jay-Jay A problem shared is a problem halved! Send your sticky situations to Jay-Jay – email wdaynz@aremedia.co.nz.
