Kids’ corner A cute cactus theme

- Created and styled by Vanessa Nouwens. Photography by Wendy Fenwick.

There are many ways to incorporate a theme into a child’s bedroom without it being too over-the-top or costing a fortune. In this cactusinspired room, for instance, two simple painted designs are the hero of the look, with the addition of a few cheap and cheerful accessories to tie it all together. As your child grows, this room can easily be adapted by swapping out the younger elements (the cactus theme) and introducing new decor pieces. Classic black and white accents provide a calming counterpoint that prevents the green and blue overpowering the room; also, these items can easily be combined with different colours in later years.

CACTUS PET ROCKS

Find three smooth rocks and paint them in two coats of paint (we used a testpot of Resene ‘Deep Sea’). When dry, add white prickle patterns with a fine paint brush (we used a testpot of Resene ‘Alabaster’ for this). Then attach some googly eye stickers (ours came from The Warehouse) and pop them into mini terracotta pots (we bought three for $3 from Kmart). These make a fun kids’ craft project and look very cute displayed on a shelf or bedside table.

PAINTED PLANT POT

Seal a terracotta pot inside and out with Resene Terracotta Sealer. Using a testpot of Resene ‘Alabaster’, paint your pot (ours was $15 from Kmart) and leave to dry. Stick small white triangle wall decals (ours were $4 from The Warehouse) onto the pot in your desired pattern; press the points down firmly so paint won’t seep underneath during the next stage. Take a testpot of Resene ‘Black’ and paint two coats over the whole pot, including the decals. Once dry, carefully peel off the decals to reveal your pattern.

We have let the paint effects be the hero of this scheme, with cheap and cheerful accessories to tie it all together.
