What will your windows wear?
From black to white, from shutters to blinds, roller, Venetian and more, window treatments have a big e ect on a space
There’s so much to think about when building or renovating and the window furnishings are often last on the list. Your choice of window furnishings will influence the overall look of both the interior and the exterior of your home so should not be underestimated.
As New Zealanders, we love our light, open spacious rooms and big stacker doors. This means the window treatments are extremely important as they’ll need to cover large spaces. At Brightshine, we often use a combination of different window treatments to accentuate not only what looks good but also what works practically in the space.
In terms of colour, you can make a statement with window treatments or you may decide it’s better to have them blend in.
TALKING TRENDS
We’re seeing more interesting combinations being used across our whole product range. Shutters or Venetians over windows and roller blinds over doors, shutters in road-facing windows and Venetians in other rooms to keep the cost down but continue the louvred look. We’re also seeing large and small louvre widths in the same house and adventurous colour combinations based on where shutters are in the home and what suits the space.
We’ve also been doing a lot of black shutters recently, which against white walls, creates a striking monochromatic impact.
The stairwell black shutter in this home looks amazing and creates a sense of drama against the white walls. The rest of the house was fitted with white 64mm shutters but with the stairwell one having a drop that was over 3100mm, it was decided that 89mm louvres would look better. The overall look of the house integrated beautifully through the use of roller blinds over the doors, shutters on all the windows and the large black shutter in the stairwell.
Roller blinds are also evolving and people are using light-coloured sunfilters that match the
walls but bring down darker blockouts at night to create a feeling of cosiness. Motorisation is huge right now and with lots of options available – we can get rid of those pull cords which can be annoying over large stacker doors. We offer battery operated motors, radio motors and home automation options.
NICE AND NEUTRAL
Venetians also do a great job of keeping the windows looking neutral so you’re free to do interesting things with the walls – and there are some truly amazing wallpapers out there! The study (pictured right) features books all over its wallpaper and has a 50mm blind to keep the windows neutral so the wallpaper remains the feature.
Venetians really are the jewel in our crown here at Brightshine – they’re a fantastic product that we make here in New Zealand. We cut, punch and then spray the blinds, meaning the finish is air-dried before turning and the coverage is second to none.
SHAPED SOLUTIONS
Arched shutters offer a solution for shapes that are difficult to cover and require a lot of fabric to curtain, cluttering the room.
In this master bedroom (pictured right) we removed the curtains and what a result!
The original arched feature intended to be a focal point in this room is celebrated rather than covered.
