s o… you find out you’re pregnant. It’s an exciting, joyful time (although it can have its scary and confusing moments, too, if it’s your first child). Slowly preparations for the arrival of your precious bundle begin, and planning a beautiful nursery is often the first step.

This is such a fun space to design but it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the decisions that need to be made on colours, furniture and practical items such as a change table and storage. Identifying what a newborn will actually need as opposed to what you want can be tricky! Having been through the ‘nursery to toddler room’ evolution, I have a few pointers for expectant mums to consider before embarking on their nursery project.

First of all, make sure to design a nursery that makes you feel happy and relaxed because you are going to be spending a lot of time in this space, too. Start by choosing a colour palette or theme – taking colours from an artwork, toy or blanket that you love is a great way to do this – and then make sure you stick to it. With this room, the felted toys and mobile were my inspiration and supplied the colours for my palette of pine green, giraffe brown, zebra white and tawny lion.

Once you’ve decided on your cot, take a little time to think about bedding. Cot sheets are a fabulous way to add a punch of colour and character. These rich tan-coloured ones anchor the pale timber cot and work well with the textures and natureinspired colours in the room. I recommend having four or five sheet sets as you can go through quite a few in just a day or two.

When it comes to furniture, try not to crowd the room: a cot, drawers, a changing area and a chair or beanbag is all you need to start with, leaving you space to add more as your little one grows.

Above all, a nursery should feel warm, comforting and safe. And don’t forget a nightlight – how sweet is this little rabbit lamp? Happy planning!
