Burnt Port Harcourt fruits, vegetables market for immediate reconstruc­tion, following Governor Wike’s approval

Traders receives N145.2mn compensati­on

GOVERNOR NYE SOM WIKE HAS approved the immediate constructi­on of the fruits and vegetables market in the D/ Line area of Port Harcourt, which was gutted by fire recently.

It was yet uncertain the worth of goods and facilities in the market that were destroyed by the night fire. But some of the affected tradtheir ers put the cost at several millions of naira.

Governor Wike also approved the release of N400,000 as compensati­on to each of the traders who were affected by the fire at the market.

Checks by business a.m. indicate that there are 213 identified traders affected by the fire, which brought the amount to N85.2 million.

He approved the payment of an additional N300,000 to 200 other traders selling around the market, which amounts to N60 million.

Dax George Kerley, special adviser on special projects to Governor Wike said at the weekend that the contractor­s for rebuilding of the market would be mobilised to site tomorrow (Tuesday), while actual constructi­on will start on October 24.

The new fruits and vegetables market will have four buildings (one storey each) and eight buildings (bungalow), designed to promote commercial activities.

Other facilities in the market include: 232 open stalls, 72 lockup shops, toilet blocks, car park, drainage, internal roads, a warehouse, generator, transforme­r, perimeter fence and a security house.

Last Friday, Kerley met with the leaders of the market, communicat­ing to them the proposed actions of the State Government to the traders.
